BioShield75

What is BioShield®75 and How Does it Work?

BioShield® 75 technology is a spray-on antimicrobial protection for porous and non-porous surfaces. BioShield® 75 antimicrobial protection gives substrates an added level of protection against damaging microbes such as bacteria, mold, and mildew, which can cause stains, odors, and product deterioration.

The active ingredient in BioShield® 75 forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer that chemically bonds to the treated surface. You could think of it as a layer of electrically charged swords. When a microorganism comes in contact with the treated surface, the quaternary amine sword punctures the cell membrane and the electrical charge shocks the cell. Since nothing is transferred to the now dead cell, the antimicrobial does not lose strength and the sword is ready for the next cell to contact it. In order for the BioShield® 75 antimicrobials to continue their effectiveness, normal cleaning of treated surfaces is necessary. Dirt buildup, paint, dead microbes, etc. will cover the treated area, prohibiting BioShield® from killing microorganisms.

What are antimicrobials?

Antimicrobials are substances that inhibit the growth of microorganisms, including bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungi. There are three classifications of antimicrobials: disinfectant, sanitizer, and protectant. BioShield® 75 is a bound protectant and is not intended to be used as a substitution for disinfectants. It is intended to be used as a supplement to your regular cleaning routine.

What are the benefits of treating products with BioShield® 75?

BioShield® 75 continually fights the growth of microbes (for 90 days or greater), making treated surfaces easier to clean and keeping them cleaner and fresher between cleanings. BioShield® 75 is effective in protecting against most common bacteria, yeasts, molds, and fungi. (Click here for a list of Controlled Microbes.)

Extensive independent laboratory testing has been conducted on the BioShield® 75 technology. It has been shown to be effective in controlling microbes, as well as safe to use. BioShield® 75 is registered with the EPA for commercial and residential use and the USDA has accepted its use in food preparation areas.

What is the difference between BioShield® 75 and other antimicrobials?

Conventional products penetrate living cells and kill by way of poisoning or chemically altering the organism. They are designed to act quickly and dissipate quickly to avoid adverse effects to humans and animals due to their toxic ingredients. Most commercial antimicrobials used for treating surfaces do a great job of getting a quick kill on bacteria and fungi, although most have a limited spectrum of effectiveness.

Heavy metal-based antimicrobials, such as silver ion, may leach into the environment and lose their effectiveness over time. BioShield® 75 takes a totally unique approach. It provides long-term control of growth on treated surfaces. The surface itself is modified to make it antimicrobial active. In addition, BioShield® 75 helps to prevent the build up of biofilm—the highly structured, matrix-encased polysaccharide food source for microorganisms.

What industries should BioShield® 75 be used in?

Germs and bacteria abound in our daily lives. (Click here for a list of the germiest places.) BioShield® 75 may be used to combat the spread of germs and viruses in a variety of applications. Click on the following links to learn more about its usefulness in these specific industries.

How should I prepare surfaces to be treated with BioShield® 75?

Surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned, any residue from cleaning agents rinsed off, and allowed to dry prior to treating with BioShield® 75. Once the surface is clean and dry, apply following label instructions.

BioShield® 75 changes the surfaces that it is applied to, creating an antimicrobial surface that prevents mold, fungus, bacteria, mildew, and algae from growing. Silks, rayon, and original paintings should be protected prior to application, and electronics should be unplugged. Allow carpets and flooring to dry prior to walking on them.

How quickly does BioShield® 75 begin to work, and how long does its protection last?

BioShield® 75 begins to work as soon as the microorganism comes into contact with the protected surface. It then works continuously to maintain a consistently lower bioburden than would be expected on a surface without BioShield® 75 protection. Under the right conditions, microbes on an untreated surface can double every 20 minutes!

BioShield® 75 is applied to surfaces by fogging, spraying, or wiping, and will not wash off with normal cleaning. It can be applied to most surfaces that are not affected by minor contact with moisture. BioShield® 75 is engineered to provide continuous antimicrobial protection for ninety (90) days or greater, keeping treated products cleaner and fresher longer than ever before.

Since BioShield® 75 is nonvolatile, insoluble, and non-leaching, the treatment should last for the life of the treated surface. The life of a treated surface depends on a number of factors, including surface preparation. If a dirty or unstable surface is treated, when the dirt comes off or the surface is disturbed, the effectiveness of the antimicrobial will decrease. Build up of soil or coating on the surface requires cleaning in order for the antimicrobial area to be effective. In addition, wear, mechanical abrasion, and abrasive or caustic (pH less than 3.0 or greater than 10.5) cleaners will also shorten effective life.
